Wat is een ramboetan?
Het is een middelgrote tropische boom en behoort tot de familie Sapindaceae. Wetenschappelijk Nephelium lappaceum genoemd, de naam rambutan verwijst ook naar de heerlijke vrucht (waarover we het gaan hebben) die deze boom produceert. Het is inheems in de Maleis-Indonesische regio en bepaalde andere regio's van Zuidoost-Azië.
Ook gespeld als rambotan, ramboutan, rambustan en ramboetan, de vrucht is nauw verwant aan andere tropische vruchten zoals de lychee, longan en mamoncillo. In feite betekent rambut in de moedertaal haar. Dit met verwijzing naar de talrijke harige uitsteeksels van de vrucht. In het Vietnamees wordt de vrucht chom chom genoemd (wat rommelig haar betekent), verwijzend naar de stekels die de huid bedekken.
Dat is een beetje over deze schijnbaar mysterieuze vrucht. Maar wacht, waarom hebben we het er eigenlijk over?

Waar is Rambutan goed voor?
Hoewel de vrucht klein is, bevat hij een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid vitamine C - een voedingsstof die de immuniteit verhoogt en gifstoffen uit je lichaam spoelt.
Rambutan bevat ook koper, een ander mineraal dat samen met ijzer werkt om de gezondheid van je bloedvaten en bloedcellen te verbeteren (omdat het ook een goede bron van ijzer is).

Rond de 14 e eeuw, de Arabische handelaren introduceerde rambutan naar Oost-Afrika. En in de 19 e eeuw, de Nederlandse introduceerde deze vrucht naar Zuid-Amerika. In 1912 reisde het fruit van Indonesië naar de Filippijnen.
